Petro-politics: Oil, Power and the Cold War
Throughout history, many close calls nearly brought the world to war. However, there was not a more politically tense period than the years of the Cold War. This era, defined by a culture of backstabbing and double alliances, reshaped the world. At MariMUN 2026, delegates will have to debate the best way to de-escalate the oil embargo that ensued during the Kippur war of ‘73 in this alternate simulation. In 1973, after the invasion of Israel by Egypt and Syria and continued ignorance of the United States, OAPEC or OPEC installed a full embargo of oil on Western Economies. Rather than pursuing appeasement, the United States has invaded Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, in a bid to gain control over the oil fields. In true Cold War fashion, the Soviet Union has responded by sending their own men to Syria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
In an emergency Security Council session, delegates will have to find the most appropriate approach to obtain de-escalation in the Middle-East and to prevent the war from spilling over.
