The League of Nations 1933
The League of Nations 1933
Re-consulting the treaty of
versailles
the very first international peacekeeping organization with its main goal being to prevent another large scale war.
It’s the year 1933 and an extraordinary meeting has been called to order. The promises outlined in the Treaty of Versailles, Germany’s responsibilities for reparations, territory and de-militarization are crumbling as the peak of the great depression fractures economies across Europe; which fueled the rise of Nazi Ideologies, overwhelming inflation across Germany and overall failing collective security. In Germany, Chancellor Adolf Hitler has just been appointed, and is openly threatening to leave the league and the World Disarmament Conference if the interests of Germany are not honoured.
Delegates must invoke the emergency tool: Article 19 of the league covenant, which allows the assembly to advise the reconsideration of treaties that have become inapplicable; in this case, the Treaty of Versailles. Delegates must come to a consensus on how to re-design the structure of the treaty keeping two topics in mind: the punitive economic damages of reparations and psychological burden instated onto the German government, as well as the fragile balance of power regarding geopolitical tensions and widespread demilitarization across Central Europe to prevent another global catastrophe.
The original mandates of 1919 have now failed. Time is ticking. Will the league rewrite history to prevent another fall across Europe, or will overwhelming nationalism fracture global peace? The pen is in your hands now.
The League of Nations,
Note: This is a General Assembly focused Specialized Agency.
